ABOUT THE DRUM MAKERS
Doug Powell is a Master Drum Maker who has been refining his art of drum making for over fifteen years. His passion of making drums began as an expression of his spiritual journey. Through involvement in a circle of spiritually dedicated men in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, Doug began drumming. He discovered a passionate love for drums. In this process his excitement about drums led him to explore the many cultures that honor the drum.
Doug is a talented artisan in many areas of the arts and has been creating with his hands his whole life. Those who know Doug say that everything he touches emerges as an object of beauty, whether it is his work with glass, clay, metal or wood. He has also built kalimbas, marimbas and xylophones. His other current passion is making lamp-worked glass beads and functional pottery. He has also built 3 stunning wood sea kayaks!
New World Drums are made with a base of laminated birch with mixed hard and soft wood accents in contrasting shades and patterns. We use a variety of stains to provide you with a choice of color from rich wood grains plus almost any color in the rainbow! The hides are laced with a low stretch polyester cord and the tuners are wood. Our drum heads are made of goat hide which has crisp highs and resounding lows.
